ENTRY RULES

 

 

1.      The JRWCA carving competition is open to all carvers.

 

2.      There will be three divisions of competition:

 

a.       Novice - Novice is defined as a carver who has been carving less than two years.  Previous Blue ribbon winners at a JRWCA competition in this division must move up to the Intermediate or Open division in that category in which the blue ribbon was won.

 

b.      Intermediate - Open to any carver.  Previous blue ribbon winners at a JRWCA competition in this division must move up to the Open division in the category the blue ribbon was won.

 

c.       Open - Open division is open to all carvers.  A carver winning a Blue ribbon in an Open division category, in any JRWCA competition, may not enter in the Intermediate Division in that category and the carving winning the blue ribbon is not eligible for competition

 

3.      The fee to enter carvings into the competition is $2.00 per entry, with a maximum of $10 for members.  $4.00 per entry, with a maximum of $20 for non-members.

 

4.      There is no limit to the number of pieces a carver may enter, but a carver may enter only TWO carvings in each category.

 

5.      Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Pre-registration begins April 10, 2010 and registration forms must be received by April 25th so that entry tags may be mailed back to the entrant prior to bringing the entry to the competition.   Mail entry forms to:

         OR give the entry form to a club officer OR leave the entry form at The Woodcraft Store.  Make checks payable to James River Woodcarvers.

 

6.      Carvings may be left at Woodcraft starting Friday April 30, 2010 and MUST have a valid entry tag attached to the carving. Walk-in entries are welcome.  All carvings must be received at the competition site no later than 5:00 pm on Friday May 7, 2010.  No exceptions will be made for late entries.

 

7.      Judging will commence at 5:30 pm on Friday May 7, 2010.

 

8.      All carving entries must have been completed since January 1, 2008.

 

9.      A blue ribbon winning carving in the OPEN division, in any carving category, in a previous JRWCA competition is not eligible for this competition.  A blue ribbon winning carving in an INTERMEDIATE division category, in any previous JRWCA competition, is not eligible for entry in the intermediate division, but may be entered in the competition in the OPEN division.  A blue ribbon winning carving in the NOVICE division, in any category, in a previous competition, is not eligible for entry in the NOVICE division, but may be entered in the Intermediate or Open divisions.

10.    All entries must be carved and finished or painted, etc. by the carver.

 

11.    Carvings in the "Under Advisement" and “Rough Out” category are eligible for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons, but are NOT eligible for "Best of Division", "Best of Show" or  “Judges Creative Award”.

 

12.    All carvings will be judged by a panel of three judges using the following four criteria:

 

         a. Design and originality                         (25%) 

         b. Skill of execution and technical difficulty      (25%)

         c. Surface finishes                                              (25%)             

         d. Overall presentation                            (25%)             

 

         The three judges, using the above criteria, will determine among themselves which carvings will be awarded ribbons. Ribbons may not be awarded in all categories as determined by the panel of judges.

 

13.    Entrants are responsible for placing their entry in the appropriate category.  However, the judges, at their discretion may move a carving to a more appropriate category in the Novice or Intermediate divisions.

 

14.    All Judges decisions are final.

 

15.    All entries must be left at the Woodcraft Store for public display Saturday, May 8th and may be picked up after 4:00 p.m.
